Standards Updates
Updates
In an effort to keep Standards current and reflective of best practice, COA issues updates on an ongoing basis. Updates to existing Standards are issued quarterly, while new information may be issued every month. The Updates page offers an opportunity to view an archive of all significant changes and revisions to the accreditation standards, including the old and new versions of a standard and its effective date.
Medicaid Project
In an effort to support COA accredited organizations that are contracted to serve Medicaid clients, COA has compiled essential information regarding Medicaid compliance. COA has incorporated a number of new Notes throughout the Standards highlighting key compliance practices. These Notes can be found in sections such as Human Resources (HR), Risk Prevention and Management (RPM), Financial Management (FIN), Behavior Support and Management (BSM), Performance and Quality Improvement (PQI), Case Management (CM), Residential Treatment Services (RTX), and Outpatient Mental Health (MH). Additionally, a new tool is available to serve as a “roadmap” demonstrating how COA’s Standards align with and can support compliance with common Medicaid requirements.
Experiential Education Supplement (EES)
The Experiential Education Supplement (EES) was designed to replace the Outdoor Activities Supplement (OAS) for organizations offering experiential learning activities as part of an assigned service section. This updated section can be assigned regardless of the level of risk associated with an activity and should eliminate the need to assign Wilderness and Adventure-Based Therapeutic Outdoor Services (WT) section, in addition to other residential sections, when an organization offers high risk activities.
Generic Service Summary Supplement (GSS)
The Generic Service Summary Supplement (GSS) will be completed by any program that is not being reviewed under a specific COA service section. This supplement can be found under COA’s Service Standards and allows organizations to respond in the MyCOA portal. Organizations will receive a rating at the Purpose level for this section.
Administrative and Service Narrative and Table of Evidence Updates
COA’s new website features an enhanced display of the Table of Evidence. On each page of standards, the Table of Evidence is located immediately after the Core Concept or Purpose standard. This new format better demonstrates the association between the Standards and the Evidence necessary to demonstrate implementation of them. In addition to the formatting change, COA has also reviewed and streamlined the Narratives and required evidence in an effort to identify the best possible documentation and reduce redundancy within and between sections of standards.
